Upcoming summer 2026 session: Low-Tech, Luddism and Liberation: reclaiming technology for the collective good

Please consider applying to Nordic Summer University Study Circle 9: Degrowth and Exnovation for its upcoming summer 2026 session “Low-Tech, Luddism and Liberation: reclaiming technology for the collective good.” From 24–31 July 2026, we’ll gather at Minhauzen Unda in Saulkrasti, Latvia, for a week-long study retreat dedicated to rethinking our relationship with technology and exploring convivial, low-tech pathways toward more democratic, humane futures. Together, we’ll examine how contemporary tools—from surveillance infrastructures to extractive digital systems—shape our lives, and how communities can reclaim agency over what is produced, how it is produced, and for whom.

We call for abstracts, papers, reflections, artistic works, and contributions of all kinds from scholars, activists, workers, artists, technologists, and anyone interested in building liberatory alternatives. Whether you’re exploring historical or contemporary forms of luddism, experimenting with low-tech practices, resisting the encroachment of exploitative “artificial intelligence” systems, or imagining democratic structures capable of dismantling harmful technologies, this gathering is a space to think, learn, and create collectively. Join us as we work toward convivial, low-energy, low-material-throughput futures grounded in care, autonomy, and solidarity.
